Less than a week after Brooklyn garage-punks THICK unveiled their first new single as a duo, the band’s former drummer Shari Page is already announcing her new solo venture Roon with a debut single on which she sings and plays all the instruments. “Sometimes” is hardly removed from THICK’s familiar power-pop charm and its softened punk edges, while Page’s solo endeavor harkens back to the band’s lo-fi beginnings prior to inking a deal with Epitaph.

“‘Sometimes’ started as an instrumental track of trial and errors,” Page shares of her new single. “After workshopping different ideas over and over, I made a MIDI intro by accident in Ableton. It ended up setting the tone for the whole song. I wanted to feel like I was getting up for school in the early 2000s and had my Good Charlotte patch on my backpack.”

While the opening riffs viscerally recall the early-’00s pop-punk scene, Page’s layered vocals are far from the sneeringly young-and-hopeless ballads belted out by Joel Madden. “I wanted to aim for simplicity and fun,” she shares. “I reached a point where I would rather have my music be ‘lame’ than try to make ‘cool kid’ music. I want to have the cheesy melodies, typical power chords and bass line, and fun drums.” With regard to the layered vocals, she adds: “I was reconnecting with a friend and I wanted to freestyle how I was feeling while doing a call and response. It’s really two interpretations back and forth. We can experience two different stories and emotions, but reconnect as one to want the same thing.”
