How else would a world-renowned Tibetan leader celebrate his eightieth birthday?

2015. Patti Smith and the Dalai Lama at Glastonbury.

Last night, The Who closed out the jam-packed, incredibly wet 2015 edition of Glastonbury. The five-day English fest’s venture back into the fields was a tumultuous one, with broken bones, last minute replacements, and strange and silly boycotts plaguing the iconic summer event’s rollout. While Glasto’s most anticipated act had to cancel (no, we aren’t talking about Foo Fighters), Patti Smith helped to facilitate one of the best surprise guest star moments of the (very) long weekend by bringing the Dalai Lama out on stage during her set.

No, His Holiness did not provide tambourine skills on Smith’s “Gloria,” but he did get serenaded by the humongous crowd for his birthday at the legendary singer-songwriter’s request. After listening to a sweet poem that Smith wrote for him along with the muddled screams of celebration from the festivalgoers, the Dalai Lama thanked the crowd profusely and made a great joke as he cut his birthday cake: “These singers and musicians have white hair, but they look very youthful! That gives me encouragement, I should be more like you—more active!”

Watch his entire appearance with Smith, including a very thoughtful speech, below.
