Working under the moniker Active Child, Pat Grossi makes glistening dream-pop, matching his soulful soft croon with carefully laid out piano and synth melodies. The overall effect is something like walking through an unfamiliar but welcoming patch of wilderness.

Hence the PAPER Magazine-premiered video for “1999,” a soothing and strange conflation of alien creatures all meeting for some sort of funeral ceremony on a gloomy day in the woods. Similar to Panda Bear’s recent “Tropic of Cancer” video, it should be unsettling by all means, but it’s decidedly not.

If you’re in California, you can catch Active Child for a few low-key, seated performances with openers Low Roar coming up in the next few weeks. Those dates are below.

Active Child tour dates with Low Roar

July
2 – Napa, CA – City Winery
3 – San Francisco, CA – Great American Music Hall
10 – Los Angeles, CA – Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian

Mercy is out now on Vagrant.
