A few weeks ago, while I was typing away in a newspaper office in South Africa, one of my co-workers stumbled out of the lunchroom with half a sheep’s head on a plate.
The head had been boiled and cut lengthwise between the eyes.
“It’s skobo,” she said, picking meat from between the bones. “It’s good. Want some?”
And that’s where I’ve been during the five-month Flood Magazine hiatus. We’re sorry for the publishing delay, but we three Flood founding members took time off to pursue individual projects.
Jesse Young, our publisher, has silently been building an independent publishing company. This summer, Young will publish Isn’t It Pretty to Think So?, the debut novel of one of his writers, Nick Miller.
Spencer Rinkus has been touring with the band. No, that’s not a joke. He’s somewhere in Asia with Evaline. If you see him, tell him to call Flood’s office. He forgot his toothbrush.
And I spent a few weeks in London at The Guardian. Then I headed to Africa to shoot video and write about crime for a local paper.
Back to the skobo: I didn’t want any. It smelled and looked like burning tires. But I do want to continue editing Flood. So we’re back. Please continue reading.
