Things were somewhat serene in Deafheaven’s initial teaser announcement of New Bermuda—their highly anticipated follow-up to Sunbather—but if that video was a kayak through the Golden Gate, the album’s first track, “Brought to the Water,” has revealed the white water ahead.
Clocking in at almost nine minutes, the multi-staged metallic epic finds the Bay Area quintet back with their firebrand of intense and detailed guitar mania. But just when you think things are going to implode into an Oakland-sized crater, the song drops back down to a careful piano melody to close it out. Should be an interesting record, to say the least.
