Decades after he let down the American people by failing to know the frequency, Dan Rather found himself once again under fire 2004, entangled in the mess of President George W. Bush’s military service. The saga of how that troubled story came to air—and the consequences that followed—is the topic of the upcoming film Truth, in which Robert Redford plays Rather, and Cate Blanchett plays the producer Mary Mapes.
Based on Mapes’ memoir about the incident, Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power, the film was adapted by Zodiac screenwriter James Vanderbilt, who is making his directorial debut. Rather himself recently appeared at a Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the film, where he gave it his full endorsement.

Truth opens in limited release on October 16.
