As is no surprise to Simpsons viewers who have noticed his love of Malibu Stacy, his way with John Waters, or his ability to enlist and sign the greatest baseball team ever assembled, Waylon Smithers is gay. We know it, we’ve always known it, but working at a Nuclear Power Plant in the early 1990s doesn’t exactly present the easiest options for coming out.

Despite the fact that nothing has really changed—the Simpsons are still America’s favorite non-prehistoric cartoon family—the year is somehow 2015, and the time is finally right for Smithers to reveal to Mr. Burns what everyone else already knows. At some point in the current—and record-breaking—twenty-seventh season of the show, there will be two episodes, according to producer Al Jean, that will deal with Smithers revealing to his boss the true nature of his sexuality.

The forthcoming exchange between Burns and Smithers should offer ample opportunity for voice actor Harry Shearer to earn his salary, which was publicly disputed via an avant-garde recreation of a classic Spinal Tap tune.

Crack that whip, Waylon!
