Jacky Winter “Half of It” video screengrab

Melbourne’s Jacky Winter had a revelation while sweeping the floor of his bar one Sunday morning in March of 2013. A shaolin revelation. With Wu-Tang blasting in the background, and his broom scratching the floor, he became “dusty,” he says, “and it screwed me loose.”

Which isn’t to say that “Half of It,” whose video we’re pleased to be premiering today, shares many sonic characteristics with, like, “Triumph;” with its nudging bassline and reverb-soaked vocal, its vibe is way more Black Francis than Osiris. But while the song bobbles along on the strength of that bass, a sheer line of e-bowed guitar slices across the track, both severing the song from its simple origin and tying the whole thing together. That insistent disruption and its broken-collage effect—it’s a trick Winter learned from RZA circa Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). It’s also what makes “Half of It” a compelling listen, that single guitar taking over the track the way a lens flare takes over the photo. The video, which you can watch below, follows a similar aesthetic logic. A series of gentle, slowly evolving shots are broken by a woman’s body surging through water.
