Along with his childhood friend Jonathan Richman, John Felice is a part of Boston musical lore. Besides being an on-again/off-again member of The Modern Lovers (he was off-again for the band’s seminal first album), Felice founded the group The Real Kids (which was originally just The Kids, but like a celebrity’s Twitter handle, adding in the word “Real” legitimized the whole operation for whatever reason).

Having graduated from Boston University, Mary Timony has strong Boston roots herself; her group Helium was formed there in the early 1990s. She’s gone through a number of bands since those days, but as part of her new outfit Ex Hex’s contribution to Merge’s massive Or Thousands of Prizes compilation from last year, Timony paid tribute to the Boston heroes by covering The Real Kids’ staple “All Kindsa Girls,” the first track from their 1977 self-titled debut. Mercifully, that version has finally been released digitally—and if you liked Ex Hex’s own self-titled debut from last year, you’ll definitely like this (and also remember that you really want them to release another album already).
