Brooklyn’s Starlight Girls weren’t always Brooklyn’s Starlight Girls. They were once simply mega-church worship leaders, no-wave noiseniks, tattoo artists, and vagabonds spread across the country. When they all came together in Bushwick, their combining and merging of sensibilities meant that some of those quirks got lost in the shuffle, but what emerged was a sharp, disco-driven beat with singer Christina B’s vocal whipping like a flag in the wind.
Following the release of their debut EP—which won them gigs with everyone from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings to Xiu Xiu (with whom the group collaborated on a single) to both Lucius and St. Lucia—the group are preparing their first full-length, Fantasm, which they’ll be self-releasing on January 15.
