The irony of a “surprise” Ty Segall record at this point in the year is that he actually already did technically have a solo album released in 2015—albeit a live one—as well as an EP that came via “the world’s first playable pair of 3D glasses.” Those efforts were following up the 2014 album-of-the-year candidate Manipulator, and led into a year full of collaborations, including an hour-long Fuzz album, a single for the new project GØGGS, the announcement of the as-yet live-only power-trio Broken Bat, and an upcoming reissue of his T. Rex covers EPs.

With less than two months in the year left to go, Segall was going to be forgiven for not having released a proper studio album in 2015, but it appears that he may just yet, as editors at both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone have reported receiving an album announcement from Drag City in the form of a VHS.

Credited to Ty Garrett Segall, the tapes are said to contain the music of the upcoming album Emotional Mugger rewritten over random movies. A press release sent along with the tapes contains the text of a strange clinical condition known as “Emotional Mugging” (“Emotional mugging is a psychoanalytic subject to subject exchange formed as a response to our hyper-digital sexual landscape”), which you can now watch Dr. Segall himself describe (at EmotionalMugger.com), with a supporting performance from (I’m about 90% sure on this) a cleaned up and slightly terrified looking King Tuff.

Updated: November 11, 12:30 p.m.: Well, it’s official, folks: despite having been involved in a career’s worth of projects in the last twelve months, 2015 will be the first calendar year that Ty Segall will not release a solo studio album since before his first full-length came out in 2008. That’s just semantics though, since Emotional Mugger, LP number nine (or ten, depending on whether or not you include Slaughterhouse), will arrive on January 22 via Drag City.

The details of the album have now been confirmed and expanded in more traditional formats, but the fun doesn’t seem to be over quite yet, as a hotline number (1-800 281-2968) has been added today to the Emotional Mugger site. When you call, a recording plays of Segall doing his best call girl voice. Before you ring, best put your wallet on the other side of the room just to be safe.

Below, you can find a text that was sent along with the press release, the official, VHS-confirmed tracklisting, and a slew of new tour dates.

get in the booth –

punch in the number

when they pick up

don’t say a word

just listen

shout at the double

from the damned from

a dry throat

dry eye chuckle

insistent / elastic (but never plastic)

thick / butt jump pierced by

the kids

sweet angel voice sinister

(what are they thinking)

guitars sliced with scribble

graffiti sprawled across the hemispheres; stuttered, stunted, dual-mono machine dreams flashing sudden stereophobic and back again / two screens alone together

squeezing shaking oozing metallic pool like brain blood,

slowly draining away all mental life.

shaking ass / nihility at most corrodes

candy’s gone no more

fun
