The Girlfriend Experience trailer

Steven Soderbergh‘s 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience follows a particularly well-placed escort in the leadup to the 2008 presidential election. Soderbergh still hasn’t announced when he’ll be returning to the world of film, but he did serve as executive producer on a new miniseries based on his earlier work.

The Girlfriend Experience stars Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Riley Keough as a law student who chooses to become a private escort for high-end clients. And while the series’ trailer, which was released today, certainly suggests that the show will be plenty steamy, it also seems to suggest that reducing it to its sex-thriller plot would be akin to calling Breaking Bad a crime show. We see Keough engage the life somewhat furtively, though she quickly grows in confidence, and it’s hard not to think of Walter White when she answers another character’s question about why she’s doing what she’s doing with an indignant “Because I like it.”

Starz will premiere the show on April 17, with all thirteen episodes being available on Starz Play and Starz On Demand. You can check out the trailer below.
