Smith Westerns broke up at the end of 2014, and its members have since moved on. Max Kakacek, the lead guitar player, has formed Whitney, a low-key roots rock band (that sounds like it has a lot of potential), and Cullen Omori, the frontman, has embarked on a solo career, having recently signed to Sub Pop.
Omori announced his debut release, New Misery, last month with “Cinnamon,” which might have come across just a tad too strong (he literally lights a Smith Westerns poster on fire in the video). That said, today’s release—the song “Sour Silk”—is a lot more promising, and finds him getting back to the glam hooks that his group was known for. Wonder how it would sound with a more prominent guitar part, though…
