Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, 99 Homes) plays Roy, a father trying to keep his son safe in upcoming sci-fi drama Midnight Special. While this might seem like a pretty run-of-the-mill plot for a film these days, don’t forget that Shannon’s son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) has paranormal abilities that make him a target for the US government as well as religious extremists.

The thriller—Jeff Nichols‘ (Mud, Take Shelter) fourth full length film—pits Roy and his family against society and the law as he races to get Alton to a safe spot away in order to save the world. Check out the new trailer for the film, which also stars Adam Driver, Joel Edgerton, and Kirsten Dunst, below.

Midnight Special premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last week and will show at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film is out in theaters nationwide on March 18.
