The first thing you’ll notice when you click play on the video below is the wigs. Powdered wigs. The kind that our forefathers fought a war to avoid having to wear. As they do on the cover of their second album, Revolutionaries, You Won’t’s Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri go full costume for the video for the album’s lead single. It’s an appropriate look for a couple of dudes who met when they were forced to fence one another in a high-school production My Favorite Year, but you shouldn’t let the zaniness get in the way of what is a sturdy, heartfelt distorto-folk song.
With its references to poltergeists, the old days, and family dynamics—not to mention Arnoudse’s tendency to round the end of his vocal lines into curlicues of melody—“Ya Ya Ya” recalls the Gummo giddiness of Neutral Milk Hotel circa On Avery Island. Those titular “ya”s aren’t the kind you need to get out, either; they’re more of a yawp of affirmation and fraternity. Ain’t nothing silly about that.
