For the first time in twenty-eight years, the Replacements played on NBC. The network doesn’t exactly have fond memories of the Minneapolis punk band after their drunken performance on Saturday Night Live in 1986 got them banned. But leave it to Jimmy Fallon to put talent first and bring the group on as last night’s Tonight Show musical guest.

This was also the band’s first television appearance since they announced their reunion in 2012,and they did well in choosing to play “Alex Chilton” off their 1987 album Pleased to Meet Me. Sharp, refined, and passionate, it’s a performance to remind us why the ’Mats are such a classic band. The Tonight Show performance also proved that the group seems to be improving with age. It’s good to see them back on television.
