In her lifetime, Joan Didion has written some of the most inspiring works that still resonate with readers today. From fiction to essays, her legacy lives in the vivid imagery that transports us to the specific times and places that she writes about. It’s kind of amazing to think that no one has made a documentary about her, at least until now.

Her nephew, actor and filmmaker Griffin Dunne, has taken the task to tell her story along with documentarian Susanne Rostock. Inspired by one of her greatest lines, the documentary will be titled We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order To Live. The film will follow Didion’s life from childhood to the present, using her prose, photographs, and interviews to bring her past to life.

The trailer was released earlier this week on Vogue.com, along with Dunne’s Kickstarter campaign to help finish the film.
