1978. Big Star Third/Sister Lovers cover

After the devastating losses of both Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel in 2010, Jody Stephens suddenly became the only surviving member of the original Big Star lineup. At the time, the recently reunited group had a number of shows scheduled, and instead of canceling, Mike Mills of R.E.M., Chris Stamey of The dB’s, and others helped put together a tribute act to fill the bill. Since then, the informal group has become the Big Star Third Live band, and has played shows around the world with a rotating cast of musicians in which they cover the entirety of the final Big Star album, Third/Sister Lovers.

For the group’s next show, they’ve put together the most impressive lineup to date, with Mike Mills, Chris Stamey, Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone of Wilco, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Jessica Pratt, Robyn Hitchcock, Mitch Easter, Kronos Quartet, and more to join Jody Stephens at The Alex Theatre in Glendale on April 27. In addition, Carl Marsh, the writer of Third’s orchestrations, will be conducting a chamber orchestra to play along with the performers. The whole event will be recorded for a film and album release next year.
