Esteemed British stage actor Mark Rylance has been cast as the eponymous “Big Friendly Giant” in director-producer Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

The multiple Tony Award–winning actor will play the titular character in Roald Dahl’s 1982 fantasy tale about a young girl, her enormous dream-catching friend, and her quest to rid the world of man-eating giants.

“I am excited and thrilled that Mark will be making this journey with us to Giant Country,” said Spielberg recently. “Everything about his career so far is about making the courageous choice and I’m honored he has chosen The BFG as his next big screen performance.”

The DreamWorks film will begin production in 2015, with a release date set for July 1, 2016.
