In what is hopefully the first of many, Iran has just delivered its first pulp Western vampire film. The debut feature from Ana Lily Amirpour is already buzzing in the independent circuit ahead of its November 21 release, and from the trailer, it’s easy to tell why.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is just the latest to contribute to the surprisingly prominent genre of subversive vampire films, following the likes of Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In and Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. However, given the inclusion of rock and roll and skateboarding within a Middle Eastern setting, it seems safe to say that the mood of this project is very much its own.
