Olivver the Kid isn’t a kid and he isn’t an Oliver: Bryan Sammis, the man behind the moniker, is a little bit of an old hand, having once been a member of crossover rockers The Neighbourhood. Sammis elected to go it alone and last October dropped his second solo EP, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. That release was capped by the single “World on Fire,” whose video we’re pleased to be premiering this morning.

Like the song itself, the video’s relatively straightforward beginning is something of a feint. Sammis builds his track over a simple back beat, his voice comfortably locking into place in a rap-sing hybrid reminiscent of Drake doing his next-morning introspections. Likewise, the video prepares us for a similarly regrettable romantic excursion: a ceremonial outdoor wedding ripped straight from True Detective’s first season, all the way down to the wolf in attendance. But just as the song explodes into a kaleidoscope of triggered beats and dots of down-pitched vocals à la Purity Ring, the video, too, takes a turn for the surprising—away from the ominous and arcane and toward a new (if still mysterious) kind of celebration.

You can check out Olivver the Kid’s “World on Fire” video below, and catch him touring up the West Coast with FMLYBND and Dark Waves on the Make America Dance Again tour. Those dates are below, too.
