PREMIERE: Don’t Be Afraid of Dentist’s “Meet You There (In Delaware)” Video
West Coast punk makes it way to the Jersey Shore.
Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey, the home of fuzzy-bright punk quartet Dentist. Though sandy shores aren’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New Jersey, that famed Asbury Park boardwalk does abut the Atlantic Ocean, after all, which means that the bright and sunny melodies more commonly associated with the Left Coast can have a home here, too.
At least, that’s the principle by which Dentist seem to operate. The group released their self-titled debut in 2014, and its blend of guitar fizzle and woozy tremolo won them gigs opening for everyone from Television to Screaming Females.
Now they’re preparing to release their second album, Ceilings, on Asbury Park label Little Dickman, and we’re pleased to be premiering the video for single “Meet You There (In Delaware).” While singer Emily Bornemann’s vocal melody floats on a coastal breeze, it’s one that seems to have crossed the Atlantic to get to her; along with the cleanliness of Justin Bornemann’s lead-guitar lines—and the gassed-out gasp of Emily’s rhythm playing—”Meet You There” is just as reminiscent of genial British punks Male Bonding as it is the westerly surf-punk that forms the core of Dentist’s sound. Between performance shots on various stages, the “Meet You There” video finds the band giving out hugs in bars, hiding in parks, and generally enjoying one another’s company as their van traces a line across the country. Call it Jersey Nice.
