LA-based artist Elohim released her new single “Hallucinating” back in September. The elegant piece of electro-pop is tied together with a knot of percussion and Elohim’s voice—think the Cardigan’s Nina Persson, all that cleanliness of tone and clear-eyed vision—but the song’s biggest charm comes in the filigree that comes flying off the rhythm in the form of a clutch of mariachi horns and strings. It’s a brilliant touch, and it’s the reason why we’re excited to be premiering the full-on mariachi version of “Hallucinating” this morning.
The track flips the script on the original, replacing the percolating guitar and processed percussion with violin stabs, castanet clatter, and feathery acoustic flutter, and dotting it here and there with electronic flourishes. Meanwhile, Elohim’s voice and the song’s tart composition at times drive the band away from the mariachi origin and into French cafe pop. It’s a tribute to “Hallucinating”’s sturdiness that it works just as well in this form as it does in its original iteration. You can give it a listen and check out the single’s artwork below, and check out an upcoming run out live dates.
