Ben Schwab and Jacob Loeb are a pair of dudes from the Midwest who dropped the Mid and moved to LA, where they formed Golden Daze. And while the music on their self-titled debut, which dropped in February, is appropriately warm and fuzzed-out, it’s covered with a scrim of sadness and nostalgia. Call it sunset rock.
It’s an aesthetic that’s reapplied to the video for album opener “Ghost,” which we’re premiering this morning. We see a vaguely Miss Havisham-ish woman play guitar and dine alone at home through the kind of VHS buzz that’s become something of a visual touchstone in the lo-fi scene lately, but here it’s not played for affect. Instead it amplifies the woman’s loneliness, the slow fades and busted tracking keeping her one step further removed—and it’s amplified further when we see the portrait on her wall.
Check out the video below, then give your mom a call. If she wants to see Golden Daze for herself, take her to one of the shows on their upcoming tour with Twin Peaks and together PANGEA, the dates of which are below.
