Kane Strang has a way with words. Which is to say that he has a way of enlarging monosyllables, zooming in on nice rounded whole notes and running them into one another so that they lose their meaning without losing their sound. “Oh So You’re Off I See” open with Strang repeating the song’s title, which if you hadn’t read this sentence you would likely assume was him sounding his way through a fa-so-la-ti run. Absurdly, this bright and wide-eyed series is executed over a dwindling guitar that eventually coaxes him into curling that melody into a twangy resolution worthy of Band of Horses.
It’s a trick that’s mirrored in the song’s video, which we’re premiering today. The clip, which was filmed in Strang’s home country of New Zealand, filters images of Strang and his band through overlaid colored glass, shifting an otherwise straightforward view into a light that makes it familiar, but still unrecognizable.
