The most recent installment in a seemingly endless procession of breezy IDER singles dating back to the summer of ’16, “You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead of You Baby” was just soothing enough to cap out our summer playlists at the time of its late-July release. The UK electro-pop duo of Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville repeat the title’s ironic reassurance over a spare, bass-heavy beat with a leisurely poolside manner symptomatic of a midsummer indolence. Appropriately, the band is now sharing a video for the single that depicts just that.
“The idea for the video came from a photoshoot we did with our friend Lottie Turner in her back garden in East London,” they explain. “The garden has so much character, filled with random furniture and objects that have been collected and abandoned over time in a house typically belonging to some twentysomething-year-olds. This made it a really creative space for a shoot and inspired our first ideas for the video. We loved the idea of the contradiction of stylized imagery and a sense of otherworldly glamour against the scruffy London backdrop and mundane activities. It kind of mirrors the feelings of irony in the song, wishing you could live your life the way you think your future self would want you to—carefree, nonchalant, and not giving a fuck—when in reality we are all anxious and confused and not sure what to do with ourselves.”
