It’s no coincidence that LA psych pop band Amo Amo’s latest single, “When I Look at You,” sounds descendent from the light, echoey vocals of My Morning Jacket, as Jim James is credited with producing the dreamy four-minute ballad. With additional vocal parallels to the male-female harmonies of golden-age Dirty Projectors, the group’s third single leading up to their debut record is considerably more spaced out than anything either artist has put out, landing in a category all their own.

“When I Look at You” is being shared with an equally dreamlike video, exploring the power of gaze, the band explains. “We can use our gaze to flatter someone, to threaten them, to chastise or to celebrate someone. Often times as adults, we are self-conscious about the power our gaze contains, and how it can be misconstrued. Little children don’t have this embarrassment…they will stare away unabashedly. So the song is saying, “I am in rapture looking at you. I want to tell you that the sight of you inspires and delights me. Is this okay with you?’”

“When I Look at You” is available on streaming services this Friday, February 8. Tour dates with their spiritual brothers My Morning Jacket are listed below the video.
