Ranking Roger, vocalist of bands the (English) Beat and General Public, has died. He was fifty-six.

Born Roger Charlery, the singer had been battling heath issues for the past few years, including a stroke in the summer of 2017.

“He fought & fought & fought, Roger was a fighter,” The Beat shared on the band’s official website. “Sadly Roger passed away a few hours ago peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Roger’s family would like to thank everyone for their constant support during this tough time. More to follow in the coming days. RIP ROGER!”

The singer was able to finish his autobiography before passing: Just Can’t Stop It is set for release later this year via Omnibus Press.
