A few weeks ago, Cold Showers announced their return in classic Dais fashion with the darkwave-indebted post-punk single “Faith,” a gothy breeding of moaning guitar and fluttering synths. Countering this brooding forecast for Motionless, their forthcoming third LP, is their new video for the second taste of the record: “Shine” sounds more derivative of Spiritualized than any new wave influence they’ve ever toted, the track building a slow crescendo which blossoms into a cool blend of saxophone and backing alto vocals a minute in, as Jonathan Weinberg’s vocals at times sounds more than a little like Jason Pierce.

Shot and directed by Travis Waddell (whose work J. Spaceman listeners may be familiar with), the video adds an extra layer of beauty to the blissful soundtrack. Shots of dancer Nicola Collie intermix with scenes of the Santa Cruz coast, all told through the nostalgic language of Super 8.

“‘Shine’’s textures are a reverent nod to MTV-era music video etherea,” Waddell explains. “The 16mm footage shot between Bolinas and Point Reyes backdrops Nicola Collie’s movements, a performance so immersive she nearly threw out her neck. From concept to completion it spans over half a year’s work, which allowed it to reform and define itself.”

Motionless is out May 24 on Dais Records. You can pre-order it here.
