Pickathon is still a little ways off, but if you’re looking to start pregaming a little early, we’re in the midst of a heavy-duty Slab Sessions season. The Happy Valley, Oregon music festival will celebrate its twenty-first year this August with a newly revealed lineup featuring Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Marías, Courtney Marie Andrew, Young Jesus, and Flasher, just to name a few artists.
Throwing it back to last year’s fest, though, this month we’re sharing a video of Lonnie Holley’s Slab Sesh, when he performed the track “Because You Left It Behind.” Falling between the release of his jarring single “I Woke Up in a Fucked-Up America” and the album that housed it, September’s MYTH, the apocalyptic backdrop of the clip playing into the dramatic emotional experience embedded in both the single and the album.
