Joe Cocker has passed away, Sony Music confirms. He was most famous for his inimitable gravelly, soulful voice.

The singer succumbed to small cell lung cancer at home in Colorado, according to an official statement from his management team. He was seventy years old.

Cocker was a fixture of the Sheffield pub scene before rising to stardom with his brilliant cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” in 1968. The iconic rock and blues singer won both a Grammy and an Oscar for the song “Up Where We Belong” from the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman. In 2007, Cocker received an OBE from the Queen of England for his service to the world of music.

He is survived by his wife, stepdaughter, and two grandchildren.
