This Friday, Brighton rockers Penelope Isles are set to release their Bella Union debut Until the Tide Creeps In. Having already shared three singles and a very informative introduction to kitchen jams, the four piece’s final single has been revealed as “Cut Your Hair,” a gussied-up version of a 2017 loosie that still, regrettably is not a Pavement cover.

Regardless, the five-minute slow-burner is its own unique brand of noisy pop, lurching along before opening up into a heavy, guitar-driven downpour. “One of my favorite songs to play live,” notes vocalist Jack Wolter. “The slow sludgy groove always feels like a refreshing moment in the set.”

Yet there’s also a greater significance to the track: the songwriter cites it as a landmark in his existential development as someone pursuing a career in music. “I wrote it in our old garage on the Isle of Man whilst uncertain whether or not to move away to pursue a career in music or not,” Wolter explains. “I had a small studio set up and it started with the drum groove and the rest happened really quickly. I guess it’s a fictional tale and concept of what could have been me if I didn’t have a go at doing ‘the band thing.’ A don’t give up on your dreams kinda thing.”

Until the Tide Creeps In is out July 12 on Bella Union. You can pre-order it here. Upcoming U.K. and U.S. tour dates are listed below the video.
