Musgraves’ legions of fans were hit with this information when the singer shared a giddy reaction to her song “Butterflies” being covered by stalwart emo outfit, Hawthorne Heights. “GUYS I’M FREAKING OUT,” Musgraves tweeted. “I just cried at the airport listening.”

She later tweeted again, stating: “If you would have told my emo ass high school self this would happen one day, I would have given you the finger and ran away in my black chucks.”

On the “flipside” of this new Hawthorne Heights release is the band’s take on Billie Eilish’s song, “8.” The track is getting positive responses from both Hawthorne Heights and Eilish fans, with one listener remarking. “I think Hawthorne Heights just made me a Billie Eilish fan, damn it.”

“We tweeted at Kacey, just wondering if she had ever listened to us back in the day,” Hawthorne Heights frontman J.T. Woodruff revealed in a press statement. “And she tweeted some of our lyrics back to us. We thought it was pretty bad ass that musicians in different genres are still connected. Billie Eilish was a similar scenario. She posted a video of her breakdancing to Niki FM, and thought it was super cool. Both of these are very talented artists, who represent the most current side of pop music.  Both sound nothing like what we are used to writing. We thought it was a great exercise in trying to make their happy pop songs sound like sad emo songs.”
