If there’s one thing we know for sure about music in 2019, it’s that “genre” is on life support, and allegiance to just one “sound” is, well, archaic.
Vocalist Jamey Jasta of the band Hatebreed clearly missed the message, as he lived up to the group’s name and lashed out at Scottish synth-rockers CHVRCHES on social media. The band’s crime, according to Jasta? Their inclusion in Deftone’s upcoming Dia De Los Deftones music festival, going down in San Diego on November 2.

“Who is churches with a v and why the fuck are they playing over Gojira,” the vocalist asked rudely on Twitter, adding, “God the music industry suckkkkks sometimes.”
After apparently doing a bit of online research, Jasta returned to Twitter with even more vitriol for CHVRCHES:
“Update: googled Churches w/ a v, they gotta be huge they did a song with a guy w/ a Marshmallow mask and people LOOOOOVE IT. Good for them…I’m sure they’re lovely people and a popular group, I don’t agree with the line up order, same w/ other festivals, if anyone is butt hurt about my opinion wait til you hear the podcast! Metal needs to be shown more respect. Longer career, legacy, more albums, bill em higher.”
CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry did not take kindly to the potshots at her band, and fired right back at Jasta. Check out her response tweets below.
Deftones curated the lineup so I don’t know how that speaks to problems with The Music Industry. I think it’s important and powerful that they promote the idea of a diverse community and try to bridge gaps instead of being guided by limiting, antiquated ideas about genre. https://t.co/3AR1NvpKPe

I saw Gojira in Glasgow years ago and have seen Deftones three times so was excited when we got asked to be on the bill. Just because someone plays or listens to “pop music” doesn’t mean they don’t understand or appreciate other things. pic.twitter.com/NXlIQyXu3I

It should be noted that CHVRCHES and Deftones have history together. Both bands played at a SPIN SXSW party at Stubb’s back in 2016, with Mayberry and company actually playing after Deftones. (The photo above of Deftones’ Chino Moreno and CHVRCHES’s Lauren Mayberry and Martin Doherty was taken at the SPIN event.) One might deduce the seeds of CHVRCHES getting booked for Dia De Los Deftones were planted at that very show.
You can watch a recap of the SPIN party featuring Deftones, CHVRCHES, Vince Staples, and White Lung here.
