David Berman, beloved poet and the singer-songwriter behind Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, passed away today at the age of fifty-two, as announced by his label Drag City via Twitter.

Along with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich, Berman founded Silver Jews in 1989. The group disbanded nine years later, but left a massive legacy behind.
