Nineteen-year-old folk-pop singer-songwriter Maia, a.k.a. mxmtoon, never uses capital letters and came on the scene in 2018 with her plum blossom EP. Since then, she’s released whimsical tracks she refers to as “rhyming diary entries” about prom dresses and seasonal depression, and will soon be unveiling her debut full-length the masquerade, most of which was crafted on her signature ukulele.

The Oakland-based, Chinese-American singer’s debut was recorded by herself in her parents’ guest room—but that didn’t stop it from amassing over 100 million streams on Spotify alone. She’s also grown her fanbase via YouTube and TikTok, and her work encapsulates many of the values her fellow Gen Zers possess.

“As a young bisexual woman of color from a family of immigrants, a lot of current events directly affect who I am,” Maia said in a press release. “I firmly believe it’s my obligation and opportunity to speak on issues that affect us all.”

Today, the 2019 Outside Lands music fest kicks off, and Maia will be in attendance. If you want to experience Outside Lands along with mxmtoon, follow us on Instagram, where she’ll be doing a takeover tomorrow

Mxmtoon’s debut album the masquerade is out September 17.  See her upcoming tour dates and listen to her latest track “blame game” below.
