Another Stranger Things star has revealed a penchant for making music.
Actress Maya Hawke, who portrays Robin Buckley on the exceedingly popular Netflix series (she’s also Ethan Hawke’s daughter), has shared her first two singles, the folksy pair “To Love a Boy” and “Stay Open.”
“To Love a Boy” arrives with a conceptual video featuring Hawke as a mermaid who washes up on the beach, leading to a trippy on-shore adventure. It’s an impressively arranged production with hints of Fiona Apple and Greg Kurstin.
“When I was brainstorming about the video, I started thinking about a mermaid coming ashore and wanting to love a boy as much as she loved the ocean,” Hawke told Pitchfork. “Then I decided the video would be more interesting if the love interest of the video was the ocean, and it was about her pursuit to get back to the ocean. I’m a professional actor, but I’m not a professional musician, so I wanted to do the whole thing really not professionally. I spent all my own money to make the video and I had to rent the mermaid costume, which ended up being incredibly shitty, but in a way that I think is really funny.”
Maya has said she’s working on a debut album, but no word on when it’s dropping yet. In the meantime, enjoy the “To Love a Boy” video below.
