Of Montreal—Kevin Barnes’s indie-experimental-pop-rock musical project—has been releasing highly intelligent, genre-shifting albums for nearly twenty years. Their latest LP Aureate Gloom presents the band diving deep into the world of psychedelic funk (perhaps “a dark and violent funk” as expressed on the album’s first single “Bassem Sabry”), a stark contrast from the stripped-down, classic alt-country sound of 2013’s Lousy with Sylvianbriar, but still within of Montreal’s immense wheelhouse.
Today, along with brand-new tour dates, the band dropped “Empyrean Abattoir”—an (musically) upbeat journey into the world of bitterness and depression drenched in eerily satisfying harmonies and instrumental swells, and fuzz.
