Boy, it certainly has been one hell of a week for fashion brands teaming up with celebrities. After seeing (way too much) of Justin Bieber in Calvin Klein’s latest ads, and some of this year’s most buzzed about actors supporting Prada’s newest menswear campaign, you wouldn’t expect to see one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century as part of a promotion, but there she is, at eighty years old: Joan Didion for Céline.

Along with a couple of others (Marie-Agnes Gillot, Freya Lawrence), Didion is the “newest” face of the French ready-to-wear brand with awarded creative director Phoebe Philo at the helm. While it appears that Didion doesn’t care personally about all of the hoopla surrounding her latest venture into the fashion world (once she appeared in a 1991 Gap ad), the importance of her resurgence into the forefront of society did not go unappreciated by the internet.

Maybe the effortlessly cool, always stylish author’s appearance in the ad will spark a new generation to pick up any one of her classic books, or see the (successfully funded) upcoming documentary about Didion, and learn about the woman behind the dark sunglasses.
