You’ll know indie pop artist Tessa Violet by her signature shock of dyed golden-yellow hair. Before today, she had released four singles from her forthcoming sophomore album, Bad Ideas, the sole songwriter on all but one; now, you can hear the album’s brand new lead single below.

Violet first made an impression online by vlogging and YouTubing under the moniker Meekakitty; after that, she started out as an acoustic-leaning solo musician, and has since graduated to fronting a live band. This year, she sold out her first headlining shows at The Troubadour in LA and Mercury Lounge in NYC, and was offered her first festival slot at Lollapalooza; she also recently supported alt-pop band AJR on The Neotheater World Tour.

Bad Ideas was made in collaboration with producer Seth Earnest, who also produced Violet’s 2014 debut album Maybe Trapped Mostly Troubled and her EP Halloway. Like any self-respecting millennial, the new album is all about the hardships of romance.

The album’s lead single, premiering today, is a slow, stripped-down acoustic track called “Words Ain’t Enough.” It’s about trying in vain to please someone who doesn’t care about you enough to do the same. “Cut myself into pieces easy to chew / carve me up into someone you’d like to choose,” Violet sings sadly. “You can say you love me / but words ain’t enough.” Listen below.

Bad Ideas is out October 25 via T∆G MUSIC. Get it here.
