Phony Ppl are getting into the spirit of things. The five-man band from Brooklyn—comprised of Elbee Thrie, Elijah Rawk, Matt “Maffyuu” Byas, Aja Grant, and Bari Bass—released their second album mō’zā-ik last year via 300 Entertainment. More recently, they performed alongside the legend Megan Thee Stallion as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series.

The free-wheeling outfit also stepped up to play “Once You Say Hello” for our Original Tracks series, a jazzy groove in line with their usual output of genre-bending music, combining elements of soul, funk, and R&B. “Once you say hello to her, it’s over” they croon with confidence amidst strings of Christmas lights and red and gold backdrops, decked out in cozy sweaters and crisp polos from Original Penguin.
