In a time of immense change and soul searching, there is something glorious and strangely beautiful about giving in, and understanding the intense feelings that come from despair. After shedding the skin of his prior record label and former bandmates, singer-songwriter Ethan Miller worked through his own internal transitions, and, now, is ready to step back into the spotlight as Howlin Rain with his latest LP, Mansion Songs.

Described as an album about ultimately “stepping out into the sunlight” after a long journey into the deep cavern of the self, Mansion Songs is purposefully unpolished and undeniably honest. One of the full-length’s standout tracks is “Coliseum”—a delicate and heartbreaking stripped-down folk track about dealing with disappointment complete with the piercing first line, “It’s a cold wind blowing your heart again.”

Listen to the premiere of the studio version of “Coliseum” below, and check out a live performance video of the track with Meg Baird at the Mansion in San Francisco.

Howlin Rain’s Mansion Songs is out January 27 on Easy Sound.
