In the late ’00s, British singer Duffy was positioned alongside contemporaries Adele and Amy Winehouse as the new face of UK soul. While Adele ascended to superstardom and Winehouse fell victim to addiction, Duffy quietly vanished from the scene after her 2010 album, Endlessly.

It was just last month that she revealed via a since-deleted Instagram post the tragic reason behind her sudden disappearance, a harrowing story involving kidnap, rape, and assault. Pushing past all this, Duffy has shared a new song today called “Something Beautiful,” which she sent to BBC Radio DJ Jo Whiley to spin on air.

“You may have read the words I wrote a few weeks back, I do feel freer,” the singer posted on Instagram today in an open letter to Whiley. “Tried to follow up with a spoken interview, but it’s harder than I thought, I will follow up in writing soon. Universal Music & no one knows I am doing this. They won’t be mad, they are lovely people. So here’s a song … here’s ‘Something Beautiful.’ It’s just something for you to play people on radio during these troubling times, if you like the song of course. If it lifts spirits. I don’t plan to release it, I just thought a little something might be nice for people if they are at home, on lockdown.”

Honoring Duffy’s wish, Whiley played the song on BBC 2 Radio. Listen to “Something Beautiful” below.
