It’s a new sound from the Minneapolis indie hip-hop label and collective, Doomtree. Veteran producers Lazerbeak (Doomtree’s CEO and co-founder) and ICETEP have formed a fresh new project: Night Stone. After working together on various Doomtree efforts, a bond was formed over their shared love of French house, electro, and techno, genres that neither producer had explored previously. They quickly developed a unique sound of their own, crafting dance floor-ready grooves with a nod to the ’90s R&B they were both raised on.
The freshly-minted project has recruited the likes of Channy Leaneagh of POLICA and MMYYKK of Astralblak to provide vocals on their forthcoming debut album. For the first single, the group is releasing “Conquer Time,” featuring Sophia Eris, best known as Lizzo’s DJ and hypewoman.
The percolating dance track pulses with an energy similar to the Baltimore club sounds that raged in the after-hours underground of the mid-’00s. Eris’ sassy vocal delivery adds the right attitude to the track, punctuated with throwback ’90s horns. Listen to it below.
Nigh Stone’s self-titled debut full-length is set for release via Doomtree on May 15.
