Buried in the primordial muck from which Eternal Tapestry rise and build their psych-drone splendor trip Wild Strawberries is, yep, a bunch of Phish. Seven-hundred cassettes worth, to be exact, that drummer Jed Bindeman somehow came into possession of and re-commissioned as master tape. True to form, Jed’s guitarist brother Nick twirls out delayed notes in seemingly endless repetition over the record’s uneven first half, with Ryan Carlile’s monolithic organ providing the only consistently challenging element. But, please, stick around. The second half finds the group deconstructing those trills into thrilling squalls of dissonance. In stunning closer “White Adder’s Tongue,” harsh tones play response to the call of noise while a moan of feedback drifts across both channels. This goes on for minute after agonizing minute, and when the pair finally reunite in a cacophonic frenzy, their combined hiss and spark is bright enough to melt the sturdiest of hard drives. This is the furthest thing from easy listening.
