In a recent interview the three members of Beech Creeps (while quite drunk) were asked if they’d be working on their debut album soon. Their response? “We’re not going to work on it. We’ll come in like half-prepared and hit it.” That pretty much sums up the band’s self-titled debut perfectly. The album is seven tracks of unfocused, yet fairly enjoyable rock and roll. Beech Creeps plays like a live album in both production and structure, as if the songs were loosely composed and then spontaneously expounded upon within the studio. The album flits from style to style, borrowing from several decades worth of influences. The variety gives the LP a murky pulse, but the consistency is unbelievably lacking. There’s no discernible direction or intention, which is a bit disappointing for a band’s first venture out but, hell, maybe that’s the point. It’s noisey alt-rock, plain and simple. Balls to the wall of sound, baby.
