Vanity Fair Reveals Brand-New Exclusive Images From a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Annie Leibovitz photographed the new Star Wars set for the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

Today is the day, everyone. It’s finally May 4—the semi-official holiday to celebrate the behemoth Star Wars franchise (“May the fourth be with you”—get it?). Unlike most years, when fans just dust off their Leia wigs and light sabers from Disneyland to remember the former glory of the George Lucas originals, 2015’s Star Wars Day has actually revealed more information about the upcoming installment of the series Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now that’s something to celebrate.

While we got a better look at some new characters and old favorites in the seventh film’s latest trailer, Vanity Fair is going all out for its latest issue. The publication is dropping new hints about characters and plot details through Annie Leibovitz‘s brand-new photos from the Force Awakens set.

Here’s what we know now:

Lupita Nyong’o (who we didn’t see in last month’s trailer) will be playing a character named Maz Kanata who is a pirate with a castle big enough to house these guys. Also, from this gorgeous photo, we now know that the character will be mostly CGI.

Beyond looking like a total badass on the side of that X-Wing fighter, VF revealed that Oscar Isaac‘s character Poe Dameron is part of the “Resistance” (a.k.a. the Rebel Alliance).

GwendolineChristie_StarWars_AnnieLeibowitz-2015

Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) is Captain Phasma (The Chrometrooper). She’s one of the major characters who fights for the First Order: the new incarnation of The Empire that is trying to reclaim the power that the evil organization lost thirty years ago in Return of the Jedi.

Adam Driver—soon-to-be better known as Star Wars villain Kylo Ren—is a big wig for the First Order and is extra sinister near a snowy secret lair with a fleet of stormtroopers efficiently called snowtroopers. Apparently, there are flametroopers employed within the First Order as well.

Han Solo and Chewy look like they are keeping their signature looks for the upcoming film, while new heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) hop aboard the best hunka junk in the universe.
