It’s kind of appropriate that so much love can come from such angry people, and last night’s Red Bull Sound Select show featuring Run the Jewels at LA’s Echoplex was an example of extremes on both ends. It’s clear that El-P and Killer Mike love each other’s company, as the duo have now released three major LPs together in a short span of years, including the brand spankin’ new Run the Jewels 2. Alone, the rappers are typically pretty freaking pissed off about most things: the state of the economy, crooked cops, America, whack emcees. But together onstage last night, their mutual grievances mixed together into a wicked froth of love—even if it was mostly in the form of hatred towards the aforementioned forces of woe. Jamie and Mike love each other, the kids love Jamie and Mike, cue the Hallmark cards. The masters of war-on-war brought the house down with cuts from both RTJ albums, and when the much-whispered about rumor of a Zack de la Rocha guest appearance came true when the Rage maestro took the stage for “Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck),” the house exploded in an eruption of angry, angry heart-eyed emojis. And then for some reason Travis Barker came out to play drums, but we were too full of love to get mad at that.
