Moving is hard. Not only is it physically and mentally draining (and often a cause for strained relationships, if only for the day) but it leaves you with a weird feeling of in-betweenness in terms of your definition of “home”—are you leaving home, or arriving at home?

This seems to be the impetus for the latest single from recent Vancouver emigrants Dead Soft. Backed with grungy Ovlov-ian guitars, “Trimmer” is a song about the existential questions that arise from a big move, proving to be as heavy thematically as it is musically. “[It’s] about longing and the passing of time,” vocalist/guitarist Nathaniel Epp explains. “It is also a nostalgic ode to the North. It is about losing a sense of home amidst the tumult of life and seeking to find that feeling again, hoping that it will keep you from drifting further away from a semblance of self.”

Despite its uncertain lyrics, “Trimmer,” like its preceding Big Blue singles, feels like a comfortable shift from lo-fi recordings to a tidy reconstruction of the best of ’90s alternative rock. Stream the track and check out all the band’s upcoming tour stops below.
