Before setting off to tour South America and Europe next year, James Blake is finishing up a pair of two-night sets on both U.S. coasts, playing LA’s Ace Theater last week and hitting New York’s BAM Harvey Theater for the second consecutive night tonight. Instead of the typical electronica-informed R&B the English songwriter’s mastered over the course of his decade in the game, he’s been hammering out some of his own songs, as well as those of others, on a grand piano.
One of those “others” happens to be Aqua, well-known for their 1997 cult eurodance hit “Barbie Girl.” It’s not a song most of us take too seriously—Blake’s audience included—though his crisp falsetto and gentle piano playing lend it the respect it deserves.
Check out YouTube user Jaime Bravo’s video of the performance below, per BrooklynVegan; unfortunately tonight’s NYC show is sold out, so there’s no telling when you’ll get a chance to see this in person.
